Thinking about writing this post reminded me uf my early days as a reporter. I worked at Wired covering biological sciences like the Human Genome Project, cloning, stem cell research, etc. I found myself attending scientific conferences that felt very grown-up and scary. So I went to J.Crew and bought a suit. I stuffed myself into a steel-gray wool jacket and matching pants with a white button-down underneath. I remember sweating a lot. But I thought I was supposed to wear a wool suit to a science conference, so I went ahead and made myself miserable.
Fifteen or so years later, I’m happy to report that I no longer attend events that make me feel like I need to wear an arbitrary suit. Even if I did, I wouldn’t. Instead, when I want to feel confident, I put on something comfortable, practical, and that reflects my personal style.
So when I heard about ShopStyle’s call for bloggers to post about their “power outfits” and donate 10% of their affiliate link sales to Dress for Success on December 8 and 9, I knew my sartorial choices would be unconventional.
I loved all the dresses over jeans on the streets during fashion week in September, and it’s a look that fits right in with my ’70s-loving style. This silk shirt dress is luxuriously soft, plus it has pockets! The jeans are high-waisted so I feel a little sucked in (in a good way) when I wear them. The Rebecca Minkoff bag looks kinda serious and can hold your entire world. The booties provide a little personality via snakeskin.
It might not be appropriate attire for most offices, but I don’t go to those much anymore.
One more thing: ShopStyle also asked that we talk about women who have empowered us. In the context of this outfit, the person who comes to mind for me is Rachel Zoe. Weird, maybe? But I have to say I got a lot of inspiration from her reality show back in the day. She was killing it and surprising everyone around her including Rog by being a boss. She also turned me on to a more refined Halston-inspired 70’s style, rather than the uber-hippie version.
So there you have it! Read on for outfit details and feel good about your shopping!
