When I woke up yesterday and checked the weather app, I immediately noticed the “severe fog warning” streaming across the top. I laughed and thought, a perfect day for the opening of San Francisco brand Marine Layer’s first east coast store. Kristen and I have a running joke that SF punishes me weather-wise every time I head out to visit her, and now it was coming after me here, on my home turf. Ah San Francisco, why must you torture me so?
Luckily the fog later “burned off” as they say in the Bay Area, and it was a lovely evening for a store opening. With childhood bestie Jill in tow, I headed over to their prime West Village corner location on famed Bleecker Street and was greeted with a warm welcome by Marine Layer creator and CEO Mike Natenshon and director of marketing Nish Nadaraja, who promptly offered us a fireball shot. And so the evening went in a flow of good conversation, lovely California wines and the super soft tees and clothing for which the brand is famous. The California-inspired shop also sports the brand’s complete line of dresses, scarves, outerwear, and men’s and women’s woven shirts and flannels. I couldn’t take my eyes off of the Sweatshirt Dress, which inspired a fitness challenge between Jill and me. We went for a drink afterward with the lovely crowd of shiny, happy people, and when I got home I tried on the fabled tee to judge for myself whether it was all it’s cracked up to be. And it was. Good luck in the Big Apple, Marine Layer…we wish you well!
