I don’t admit this often, but I was in high school in the ’80s. Let’s not do the math! Suffice it to say I grew up in a very small town in Pennsylvania, but the impact of Guess jeans was felt strongly even there, where the closest mall was a good 30-minute drive. I HAD to have a pair of these jeans with the magical question mark label. I cried to my mother to pleeeeeeease please please buy me a pair. She was a rock—my pleading did not move her. But one weekend, my parents dropped me at my grandparents’ house when they went away for the weekend. It was my grandmother, who’d raised two sons, who caved. We came home from that faraway mall with perfectly faded, tapered-leg Guess jeans, and my dreams of being a cool girl instantly came true (if only in my own mind). It’s one of many reasons she was the best nana ever.
That iconic triangle emblem with the mysterious question mark gave me a certain swagger, and it was one of the first memories I have of experiencing how your clothes can impact everything: your confidence, comfort (they were snug but I could breathe), and even your happiness. It wasn’t about spending a lot of money; it was finding that perfect piece—the item that made you feel awesome. And while my Guess jeans did that for me, I also looked at Claudia Schiffer in those romantic Ellen Von Unwerth ads wearing a black lace bustier, and she was just beyond anything I ever thought I could emulate. She was SO feminine, SO bombshell, and so incredibly confident. I observed in awe from a distance.
But the wonderful thing about Claudia Schiffer is that 30 years later she is still modeling for Guess, and once again she’s wearing an amazing bustier—which is now available as part of the Guess 30th Anniversary Collection! And I, 30 years older as well (let’s keep that between you and me, what do you say?), am completely up for rocking it. With the 3-zip Marilyn jeans and the Drew Anniversary Top handy for chilly moments, I’m ready to be the woman my teenage self was a little bit afraid of.
