Last night was awesome. Because while I was buying one of her amazingly gorgeous maxi dresses, Mara Hoffman entered the jet stream, introduced herself, and said: “Wow, I feel like we could be cousins! I feel like we’re from the same tribe.”
And I just completely love her work and her vibe so that made me really happy. The jet stream was host to a little Mara Hoffman pop up shop at the Raleigh Hotel in Miami on the second night of Art Basel. The dress I was purchasing when we had our soul sisters moment has a leopard print with a tribal, embroidered chest plate and tassels. (You will definitely see it soon on these pages!) I took some detail shots of the pieces, though it was tough to get photos because the jet stream was pretty tiny! It was mostly her resort collection, and there were also custom pieces featuring images from various artists including the famous groups-of-naked-people photographer Spencer Tunick. He also did a custom (NSFW) photo for the pop up that you can see below.
Mara asked me what my ethnicity was—I only know half because I’m adopted and my genetic analysis (more about that soon!) only could look at my biological mother’s background. Mara is half Sicilian and half Jewish, making me suspect as I have before that I might be, DNA-wise anyway, part of “the tribe!” The agency that handled my adoption actually says that’s not true, but I guess you can’t always be sure with these things.
Anyway, what do you guys think? Do we look like cousins?
