When I was invited to “An Evening With India Hicks,” I immediately wanted to attend because I had a vague idea that she was somehow related to the royal family, that she was fabulous and stylish, and that an evening with her should not be missed.
Because I’m always well-prepared, I Googled “India Hicks” at a stop light on the way to the event to find out more. It turned out we had more in common than I realized: she had become legal guardian to a 15-year-old boy a few years ago; I recently became a foster mom to a 15-year-old boy. Now I was even more excited to meet her.
The event was held at the STUNNING home of Gretchen Hansen, founder and CEO of Decorist, a virtual interior design startup. The party was to celebrate Hicks own new company (a Stella & Dot-esque direct-to-consumer line of luxury accessories) as well as her collaboration with Decorist.
I was on the second floor of the house when a gorgeous, incredibly fit woman approached me with her had outstretched saying, “Hello, I’m India!” She was that friendly to everyone. And I know this sounds cliche, but after chatting with her (check out the article I wrote for Forbes), I was so inspired. She is brash and refined at the same time, loud but polite, royalty but normal, and 100% unapologetic—and I’m making a conscious attempt to reduce the approximately 1,000 times per day I say “sorry.”
After an eloquent toast explaining her brand and the inspiration behind several of the pieces in it she declared: “Let’s all get really drunk!” I was doing my detox at the time, so I didn’t, but I loved the sentiment. I’ll be raising a belated glass to her tonight.
