The smoldering love affair between Richard Burdon and Elizabeth Taylor is well known, but we’ll get even more intimate with their romance this month when Liz & Dick, starring Lindsay Lohan, airs on Lifetime on November 25.
But all anyone has to do is take one look at a photo of Ms. Taylor during that time to see why Mr. Burton was desperately smitten. Liz’s smokey stare, her silk satin dresses playing up her assets of which she had many, red lips and voluminous hair–it all added up to unprecedented Hollywood glamour and one of the most gorgeous women to ever grace the screen.
Liz and Dick both married multiple times (to each other and others, who can even keep count?!), but their turbulent relationship was known as the “marriage of the century.” In the 1960s and ’70s they were rarely out of the news. They married in 1964 and divorced in 1974. That was the first time! The were on-again, off-again to such an extreme that they married again in 1975 only to divorce in 1976. Perhaps they were too talented and good-looking to join together? Each was an Academy Award nominatee (Liz won two, Dick none), and each had the kind of gorgeous face that the silver screen and pretty much everyone in the world loves. They both had piercing blue eyes that one could imagine igniting electrical fires when their gazes crossed. It certainly wasn’t a recipe for a peaceful, drama-free domestic life.
And they probably liked it that way! Tune in on November 25 to see how this famous duo thrived (temporarily, anyway) on drama. Lindsay Lohan’s interpretation will be one to watch for sure. Can LiLo channel one of the steamiest Hollywood sirens of all time? And what about her counterpart, the more under-the-radar Grant Bowler? I must say he does remind one of Mr. Burton! He’s got the eyes and the jawline (though not Burton’s famous chin dimple).
In Lindsay’s case, she surely will be sporting some amazing satin dresses with cinched waists, seriously red lips, big hair, and major cleavage: a starting point for anyone who wants to portray Elizabeth Taylor in the ’60s. You can channel that same glamour with inspiration from the outfit below! Add some serious bling (diamonds, of course) and a veiled fascinator and you will be on your fifth wedding in no time.
Lindsay Lohan stars as the legendary dame Elizabeth Taylor alongside Grant Bowler as celebrated actor Richard Burton in the Lifetime Original Movie Liz & Dick, making its world premiere Sunday, November 25, at 9pm ET on Lifetime. Based on the true story of the couple’s passionate and tumultuous love affair Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were Hollywood royalty and their fiery romance — often called “the marriage of the century” — was the most notorious, publicized and celebrated love affair of its day.
