To celebrate Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, who died much too soon 10 years ago today after she crashed a car she was driving in Hondouras when she was 31, BlackBook has created a list of “5 Lessons We Learned from Left Eye Lisa Lopes.” She was the only rapper in the all-girl group TLC, she wore a condom on her glasses, and she burned down hers and her boyfriend’s house (kind of by accident, plus did you know he was abusive?).
We should certainly also celebrate her style, both sartorially (those girls could look just as sexy in a baggy jersey and backwards baseball cap as in skin-tight dresses) and how she lived her too-short life. Back then I liked Waterfalls and What About Your Friends, was jealous of Chilli because she once flirted with my husband (according to him!) at an NYC club, and thought Left Eye was The Troublemaker. But I wish I’d paid better attention after reading this at BlackBook:
She showed an audience of women and girls how to maneuver through tough circumstances by working hard, staying focused, and genuinely liking yourself. That’s a big part of feminism, I think—women showing each other (how) to survive—and Left Eye did, until she couldn’t anymore.
Read the rest of their Left Eye lessons and watch more videos here. Also, I just spent an hour of my life watching TLC videos. Don’t be surprised if you see me in super baggy pants and a giant plaid shirt this weekend.
