You may have noticed I’m a bit of a Francophile. I’m obsessed with Paris, Emmanuelle Alt, Shourouk, and I received a degree in French in college though I now, shamefully, can barely string a sentence together. I spent one very memorable Bastille Day in Avignon when I was but a jeune fille. Aaaaaaaah those were the days… of drinking forties on the curb while watching fireworks. I’m sure the Frenchies were horrifé! But I was a poor college student and didn’t know any better. I made up for it by going back as more of a grown-up and drinking vin rosé at Les Deux Magots, so there. Anyway, Bastille Day marks the day in 1789 when revolutionaries against King Louis XVI stormed the Bastille, a prison in Paris. It held just 7 inmates at the time, but their successful liberation was the beginning of the French Revolution and eventually led to the end of an absolute monarchy in France and the beginning of the French Republic, which is something to celebrate indeed. Is it blasphemy to celebrate such an important day with shopping? I promise to remain sober-faced and ponder the importance of personal freedom as I shop at Bastille in Union Square tomorrow, even if they will be passing out yummy macrons for shopping sustenance. The store has spanking new shipments of Acne, Band of Outsiders, DVF, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Topman and lots more! Allons faire du shopping! (O.K. fine I had to look that up)

Here are some other idées (sorry! somebody stop me) for Frenchy shopping in San Francisco:
For l’art et la mode in my favorite neighborhood for feeling like a tourist in your own city (in a good way!), you can’t beat La Boutique in Jackson Square. The shop is massive by city standards, and its co-owner Carole first introduced me to jewelry designer Shourouk, with whom I am now obsessed. The shop carries amazing, hard-to-find brands including Baum und Pferdgarten, MM6 by Maison Martin Margiela, Athé Vanessa Bruno, Zadig & Voltaire, and lots more!

Have you smelled a Diptyque candle? If yes, then you know what I’m talking about. If no, get on over to Diptyque’s San Francisco outpost tout de suite to fill your home with dreamy scents that will transport you to romantic summer evenings in the City of Light.
