I recently had the pleasure of attending a fashion presentation by Blue Illusion, a brand that’s extremely well-known in Australia, but has just three stores in the United States, all of them in Northern California.
And what got me really excited about Blue Illusion was their recent collaboration with Iris Apfel, who shows in the videos below how to style many of the designs in unexpected ways. The 94-year-old is living proof that style is ageless, and that you can never wear too many accessories. I particularly LOVE her take on jeans in the video above. As a young woman, she wanted to buy them—she had created a whole outfit in her mind—and the sales associates told her young women don’t wear jeans. Obviously that didn’t stop her.
If you’re in the Bay Area, check out the brand’s first U.S. stores in Los Gatos, Burlingame and Menlo Park.
When I asked co-founder Donna Guest (who founded Blue Illusion with her husband, Danny) why she chose Northern California as the location for the first U.S. stores, she said that in addition to the tech community, it was because the climate is the most similar to Melbourne’s, where they’re based, and she figured that would provide a comfortable transition for her buyers and sales associates. How thoughtful, right? Just one of the perks of working for a family-owned business—they’ve been independent and family-run since they launched more than 15 years ago.
