Next Wednesday, Dec. 14, Photobooth on Valencia in San Francisco is co-hosting a holiday party with Mira Mira, the impossible-to-resist boutique just around the corner on 22nd, as well as Rue, that addictive interior design online mag. I was majorly honored that Mira Eva (of Mira Mira), asked to feature me on the party invite. Little did I know having Mira style me and being photographed by Vince Donovan of Photobooth would pretty much change my whole outlook on life.
I know, I’m being dramatic. But for real, this is what happened: Mira picked out garments for me that I never would have chosen in a million years. Even after trying on said garments, I was sure I wouldn’t wear them in the photo shoot. But the more Mira was like “YES,” and the more I kind of gave the clothes a chance and checked myself out in the mirror and listened to her tell me that actually no I did not have “enormous thighs” and an “enormous ass” and that my arms were perfectly fine, the more I warmed up to the purple, velvet, high-waisted pants and tucked-untucked blouse. Looking back to our styling session, I realize that while I thought I was totally evolved and accepting myself the way I am and not concerned about being stick model thin, I was actually kind of a jerk to myself. I mean, going around telling people that I have a huge ass and horrible arms isn’t very nice of me.
So once I had on my out-of-the-comfort-zone outfit, we headed over to Photobooth, where Vince told us that we would not be smiling for the photos. What’s that now? Smiling in pictures is how you don’t look grumpy and unattractive in photos, unless of course you’re a model and you know how to smize and smolder and have the bone structure for that sort of thing. But ok, I had already eschewed a maxi dress for high-waisted pants, why not continue with this evening of self discovery and discomfort? Oh, and did I mention these were polaroids? There would be no immediate redos, and no one wanted to be there all night, so getting it right quickly was of the essence.
The first try was, everyone agreed, “harsh.” The second try received wows and awesomes and such, and it’s the one you see before you on the flier (I’m the second one down). Two tries! So there you have it. I am now all about high waisted pants and being a little nicer to myself and not needing to always smile. Thanks, Mira & Vince!
P.S. You should totally come to the party. Don’t forget to RSVP!
