Key challenges faced upon re-entry:
2. Free chips offered upon checking at the Farmer’s Daughter hotel
3. Complementary whiskey tasting also offered at the hotel
4. A bottle of champagne and two chocolate-chip cookies waiting for me when I returned to my hotel after a long day at the conference with no lunch.
5. Dinner and drinks with a friend from college I hadn’t seen for 10+ years.
6. Driving back to SF from L.A. without Good & Plenty.
Re-entry after the Hormone Reset Diet was, initially, scary. Would I go wild with candy and chocolate and champagne and wind up bloated and sad under my crumb-covered faux fur throw? Candy and champagne are kind of the best, until the minute you stop consuming them and feel like shit.
But, it’s the strangest thing these days. I used to SO look forward to my glass of wine during dinner, and then the other 2 or 3 glasses after and Frida’s bedtime. But now it’s something else. It’s, perhaps, a realization that the alcohol buzz is not always all that great (!). Sometimes it just makes you extra frustrated that you can’t enjoy your buzz because you still have to put the child to bed and she WON’T put on her PJs and is running around the house naked and cackling.
OK though, sometimes it’s pretty great.
While I didn’t drink the champagne at the hotel, I did share a few glasses of wine with Magic, my wonderful college friend, in L.A. after Simply Stylist. And I ate the cookies when I went back to the room. That was my first decadent evening in 23 days.
Then came the night a week later when the husband and I opened a bottle of red and dug into the Harry & David’s box my parents had shipped us for Easter, which contained chocolate-covered kettle corn, chocolate-covered cherries, chocolate truffles, jam-filled cookies and mint-chocolate candies. I drank 2.5 glasses and we watched three episodes of Better Call Saul. After the husband went to bed, I stayed up until 2am watching Scandal. It was glorious.
In the morning, I woke up around 7am. I had a headache and could have used a bit more sleep. But I was not destroyed the way I typically would be after that type of behavior and just 5 hours of sleep. I took Advil, drank a green protein smoothie, went to the gym, drank a coffee collagen smoothie, painted a wall in Frida’s room with chalkboard paint and stayed up until 10pm watching Star Wars episode 7. Slept until 7:30am, and felt pretty freakin good the next day.
Overall, the re-entry is going well. I do seem to have hit a wall with weight loss—I’m holding solid at 10 pounds. And after my dalliances with sugar and alcohol, I’ve had some minor breakouts on my forehead. But I’m eating more healthy than ever before in my life, I feel great, and the scale is not going up. For these things I am thankful.
