About a month ago, my Pilates client mentioned Downton Abbey, some Masterpiece Theater show that sounded impossibly boring. Over the next week, the show came up in conversation about five million times, with person after person saying it was AMAZING and that I would LOVE it. A month later, I’m addicted and the husband (who was even more skeptical) and I have been propping our eyelids open to cram in at least an episode a night (while we also catch up on Breaking Bad–why so much great TV?!).
SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVEN’T BEEN WATCHING: Last night we watched the episode in which Countess Cora Grantham, played by Elizabeth McGovern, becomes pregnant. It’s always thrilling to me when an older woman gets pregnant, whether in reality or in Masterpiece Theater. Though I’m very excited about adopting (which, for those of you who might not know my husband and I hope to finally achieve this year), I still dream that in m sleep the fertility fairy will sprinkle me with pixie dust and I’ll become magically with child. What? It could happen.
After watching that episode, I pursued all the information I could find about Elizabeth McGovern. Ordinary People! She’s Having a Baby! I almost forgot. But the most intriguing discovery was that a few years ago Ms. McGovern started a band called Sadie and the Hotheads. First she gets pregnant as a middle-aged countess, then she starts a band in her late 40s (she’s now 50) with no previous professional music experience under her belt. It’s all very inspiring.
And if you’re still not convinced to watch Downton Abbey, watch it for the amazing costumes! They are truly divine.
