When I married into an Iranian-American (A.K.A. Persian) family eight years ago, I was suddenly surrounded by women with the mot beautiful eyes I’d ever seen, and who were incredibly skilled at eye makeup application—in particular liquid eyeliner. Which is something I’ve avoided my entire life. It’s impossible to imagine my clumsy self drawing a straight line that close to my eye in a manner that would improve the look of anything. But the cat-eye is just so seductive that I finally tried my hand. And while the Persians still put me to shame, I’m determined to master it! That’s what inspired this series of posts: The Eyeliner Chronicles. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be interviewing all my favorite girlfriends who manage to achieve that perfect Sophia Loren, Brigitte Bardot, Marilyn Monroe (pick your fave eyeliner icon!) look. Eyeliner application isn’t a one size fits all affair. Different strokes for different folks, and I figure if we catalogue enough techniques we can find a method that works for everyone. It seems appropriate to start with my sister-in-law, the gorgeous Azita Fatheree, who despite sleeping very little while caring for her two children always manages to have a perfectly-lined eye. Here’s how she does it!
1. What’s your go-to eyeliner?
I don’t have a favorite brand, but I am currently using the Sephora black liquid liner with its precision brush. I never use pencil eyeliner, because I always end up with smudge. The liquid liner gives me better control for the look I want.
2. Could you take us through a step by step of how you apply your eyeliner to get that perfect result?
I apply my liner before eye shadow and mascara. I always start with my left eye, working a thin line from the outer corner all the way to the inner corner of my eye. I have seen women pull at the skin next to the brow, but that gives a distorted look at the end. I do, however, catch myself with my mouth wide open, as if it helps to open my eyes wider. Then, with my right eye, I start from the inner corner and work towards the outer. It can only work this way for me since I am right handed. If I deviate, I will mess up. Then, as needed, I can broaden the strokes to get a darker look, usually for an evening outing.
3. When did you first start using eyeliner? Was there someone in your family who inspired the look?
I started wearing it inconsistently in college. My mom has always been my inspiration for fashion, makeup, and overall beauty. Her eye makeup has always been flawless. I think I really started becoming comfortable with how I apply makeup and my look in my 30s.
4. What other eye makeup is your favorite?
MASCARA!!! I love it and will not live without it. I used L’oreal for years, but I recently switched to Tarte’s Lights, Camera, Lashes. I am on my third round, and I like it, because I want to believe that it is better for my lashes.

6. Any other tips or tricks you’d like to share?
Since I am sleep deprived, I use Origins GinZing to brighten the dark circles under my eyes.
