Many, many women wore various versions of the harem pant during fashion week in New York last week. One would think the trend might be waning by now. The harem style pant has been widely criticised and lamented. Still, they persevere and proliferate. Just today, the Wall Street Journal reported that Gucci opened up Milan fashion week with harem pants. In New York they appeared on the Spring/Summer 2011 runways at Rebecca Minkoff and Vera Wang, indicating that we’ll still be seeing dropped crotches come Spring.
I admit that I, along with the Fug girls, have mocked harem pants. That’s why I can’t believe what I’m about to say: I want some. Why? Because they are basically sweats in pants’ clothing and they look really freaking comfortable! Some of them even ARE sweatpants, but — and again I can’t believe I’m starting to believe this — they look rather chic with heels! I secretly envied women strutting through Lincoln Center in killer booties with pegged harem pants. Their feet may have been constricted, but their booties (the other ones) certainly were not. These from Hayden-Harnett are my most-coveted at the moment.
OK, look at them. Is it me or are they kind of cute? It’s also necessary to point out that the more recent Hammer-ish pants are a bit more tailored and have a less crotch droppage, and perhaps this accounts for my change of heart. I may also be conflating harem pants and relaxed-fit trousers? Or is it just that the trend has worked itself so firmly into my aesthetic consciousness that I know find them attractive — kind of like a jolie-laide thing? I need a cocktail.
